Naveed Nawaz and Chaminda Vaas join coaching staff of Sri Lanka men’s team


Former Sri Lankan batsman Naveed Nawaz has been made the assistant coach of the Sri Lanka men’s team under new head coach Chris Silverwood.Nawaz was most recently the Bangladesh Under-19 coach and oversaw that team’s victory in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. The tenure of his appointment was two years.

Sri Lanka’s coaching staff has also appointed former fast bowler Chaminda Vaas, who has held the position several times over the past decade. Piel Wijetunge has served as the country’s spin bowling coach for years and has also been added to the top team’s staff. Manoj Abevikrama has been made the fielding coach of the team.

The appointment of these coaches, however, is till the end of the upcoming Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is to visit Bangladesh in May. In the last few months, when efforts were being made to find a replacement for Mickey Arthur, Nawaz’s name had cropped up for the post of head coach. But it is understandable that the appointment of a better international coach was given priority.

In Bangladesh, Nawaz played the role of developing youth like Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shariful Islam and Shamim Hussain. All these players got a place in the Bangladesh senior team.

Nawaz represented Sri Lanka in one Test and three ODIs as a player and was one of the first-class cricket legends from 1990 to early 2000. He scored 6892 runs at an average of 36.27.
