Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa
Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was the first prime minister Nigeria had after her independence. He was born in 1912 at Bauchi state by Yakubu Dan Zala (His father). Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was indeed a great leader. He was one of the nationalists who helped in emancipating Nigeria from colonialism. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was murdered in a military coup on January 15, 1966. Nonetheless, he played a significant role as one of Nigeria’s leaders from 1960 till date.
Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe
Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe (popularly referred to as “Zic” ) was also one of the Nigeria’s leaders from 1960 till date. He is one of the most significant nationalists of Nigeria. The role he played in emancipation Nigeria from colonialism, made people to call him “The Father of Nigeria Nationalists“.
Zic was born on the 16th of November 1904, in Zungeru, Northern Nigeria by Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe later died in May 1996. He spent 91 years on earth.
Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was the first head of state Nigeria had in 1965. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was born in Abia state, by Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi on 3rd of March 1924. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi also played crucial role as one of the past head of state Nigeria had. He schooled in Umuahia and in Kano state Nigeria. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi died in 29 July 1966. He lived for 42 years on earth.
General Yakubu “Jack” Dan-Yumma Gowon
He is also one of the Nigeria’s leaders from 1960 till date. He was born in October 19, 1934 in a village called “Lur” in Plateau state, Nigeria.
One of the most notable things General Yakubu “Jack” Dan-Yumma Gowon did was the creation of twelve new states. Well, as at the time this article was written, Gowon is still alive.
Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed
Another past leader Nigeria had was Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed. He was a military ruler, born in November 8, 1938 in Kano city. Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed joined the Nigerian Army in 1958, but he was assassination in 1976. Though he didn’t stay long in office, Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed also played a significant role as one Nigeria’s past leaders
Olusegun Obasanjo was the former Nigerian Army general. He was the President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. General Olusegun Obasanjo was born on 5 May 1937 by Amos Adigun Obasanjo Bankole in Ogun state, Nigeria.
The good works of Olusegun Obasanjo earned him lots of awards. Some of which are: Defence Service Medal (DSM), Forces Service Star (FSS), General Service Medal (GSM). Olusegun Obasanjo is indeed one of the best of all Nigeria’s leaders from 1960 till today.
Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari
One of the greatest Nigeria’s leader from 1960 today was Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari. He was born in 1925 by Ahmadu Rufa’i. Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari played a significant roll as a one time Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
Currently, Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari is 93 years old. He is still contributing to the development of Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari ruled Nigeria between 1983 – 1985. Of course, he is one of Nigeria’s presidents from 1960 till date. During his first regime (1983 – 1985), Tunde Idiagbon was his vice. (Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters). As at that time, Muhammadu Buhari was one of the youngest president Nigeria had.
Ibrahim Babangida was President of Nigeria, from 27 August 1985 to 26 August 1993. He was born in Minna on 17 August 1941. Babangida is a very significant personality in the history of Nigeria. He is responsible for the endorsement of the Stuctural Adjustment Program (SAP).
Ibrahim Babangida created 11 (eleven) states before leaving office. He is currently 77 years. Indeed he was one of great Nigeria leaders from 1960 till date.
Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan
Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan is one of the most respected president in Nigeria. He is a renounce lawyer, who contributed greatly to Nigeria’s legal system. Ernest was born at Lagos on the 9th of May 1936.
He lasted for just three months in office. After which he was removed in a coup led by General Sani Abacha. He eventually died in 26 August 1993.
He is also one of the most recognised Nigeria’s leaders since 1960 till todate. Sani Abacha ruled from 1993 to 1998. He was born on the 20th of September 1943. He died equally died on the 8th of June 1998. As at that time, Sani was 54 years old.
The first retired Military officer who ruled Nigeria was Abdulsalami Abubakar. He was born by Abubakar Jibrin (his father) on 13 June 1942. Abdulsalami Abubakar is noted for his modification of the 1979 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. Abdulsalami Abubakar left office on 29 May 1999. He is currently 76 years.
Olusegun Obasanjo is a one time leader of Nigeria. He ruled between 1976 – 1979, as a military leader. In 29 May 1999 CHIEF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO emerged as president again. He left office in 29 May 2007.
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was apparently one of the best leaders of Nigeria. He was born into an aristocratic Fulani family in Katsina, Nigeria. No doubt, Yar’Adua proposed a government of national unity. Nevertheless, he died on 5 May 2010.
President Goodluck Jonathan is also one of the great leaders Nigeria had. He was born in Bayelsa state Nigeria, and was married to Dame Patience. Goodluck took over from Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as the then vice president of Nigeria. Following his service to the country, Goodluck Jonathan was made an ambassador of peace.
Today, the president of Nigeria is President Muhammadu Buhari. He took over from Goodluck Jonathan after winning the 2015 presidential election. Till today, Muhammadu Buhari is still the president and leader of Nigeria.
